The OBD-II protocol or rather the EOBD (European On-Board Diagnostics) protocol used in the UK and the EU has been legally mandatory for emissions reasons for petrol vehicles since January 1, 2001 and diesel vehicles since January 1, 2004. However, the OBD-II protocol has been in use in many vehicles across the world since 1996, having originated in the United States.
The OBD-II/EOBD interface refers to the standardized 16-pin diagnostic port, while the OBD-II/EOBD protocol consists of multiple communication standards (ISO 9141-2, KWP2000, J1850 VPW, J1850 PWM, ISO 15765 CAN).
